Heading up town to get my milk The river flows by like rumpled silk The chiffchaffs chuff and the thrush replies The ground is squidgy neath my pumps The ducks dive down and flutter their rumps One hour before I was down in the dumps Feathers and twinkles cover my eyes. In my nature disguise. Sparrow spins past and rips the wing Of a neon laced speckly starling Two blue tits punch a bush in surprise. A blackcap doffs its hat in respect To avoid being sparrow pecked I’m wond’ring which biscuits I’ll select Branches and duck legs strapped to my thighs. In my nature disguise. Run my thumb all along the rails The shuddering thrum rattling my nails Bump my palm against the lamp post Watch wet mud rise over my damp toes Sprigs that suck the moisture from your tongue. Twigs with lichen dripping from every rung Pinch at furry wisps and rubbery flaps Sunshine take me somewhere I can collapse. Heading on home to drink hot choc I’m somehow scooped up in a redwing flock Smelling armpits I gasp in shock They drop me down to chestnut top A crow starts shouting and she won’t stop Bud sap sticking all over the shop Trying to get this vision untied Stepping out of my nature disguise. Run my thumb all along the rails The shuddering thrum rattling my nails Bump my palm against the lamp post Watch wet mud rise over my damp toes

Following the black stream That keeps your footsteps numb To the many kilometres Of soft mycelium In and out the dark holes Framed by collapsing trees Then through the squeaking forest Like dolphins in the sea Up to the singing lamp post..,, Over the sunken slug And left towards the tall fence With robins in its squares and the flitter of the wrens The plastic bottle otter Furtively looking round Then climb up to the surface And cross to come back down Keep on towards Kings Norton But hold your hand up high To shield against the bright light That blasts your path from sight The beacon on the water The flames that have been doused The green illumination That cloaks the junction house The flooding of the walkway The world opening out A little wooden bench as A raft in a sea where your feelings are allowed Across the concrete river Of boats that glare and roar Scooped into the horizon And down the ramp into safety once more The stillness of the sloping The waves that never break Suspended in forever On an orange dappled lake The pines that cast a shadow The cloud of giant hounds The eerie grey crab apple That watches you as you turn right and walk down Towards the old camp pub On the old camp road Up to the blackened birch trunk And station house of old Climb the steps that glitter And take a bridge through time and bumble Right towards the curves where The cars change their sound to a swooping low grumble White and coloured crystals are motioning your shadow on The pockmarked metal couple Feel the glow of hot food and carry on Down quite a daunting walkway Until you see red lights A line of skyscrapers Adorn the HORIZON - turn right The ivy-coATED forest Growing out of walls THEN walk towards the water And down the ramp that falls Into the grey zone But now with rhythmic clangs The wind in the trees gives a sense of unease As THE whooshing metal bangs there’s a concrete cavern With three holes in its face But just keep on walking At an industrial pace Hit it right between the slug eyes The lamp post holds its tune Along the fence of trees And the river’s creaking swoons. onto a tufted Mound where both your feet might catch Then pat the bridges belly And end your walk standing in the conifer patch.
